About Us

Welcome To Chilwell Blades Fencing Club

We are one of Nottingham's largest three weapon fencing clubs and the East Midlands Premier Sabre Club based at Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre, Nottingham. We have a reputation for being a relaxed, friendly, vibrant, club with juniors and seniors, some old enough to know better! Whilst we enjoy improving our skills as fencers we put a lot of emphasis on having a good time and enjoying our fencing, and our club ethos has stood the test of time as this year, we are proud to say, is our 50th Anniversary!

We are very proud to have a large contingent of successful fencers from all age groups, who regularly compete in the UK, internationally and on the World fencing circuit and who have represented Great Britain and home countries. On the Veteran circuit we have Veteran-World, European and Commonwealth champions and our president Malc, is a Veteran, double, World Sabre Champion!!

Malc Cawton formed the club in his garage in 1974, he then moved it to Chilwell Olympia, just a few months after the Olympia opened. The ever youthful Richard Collins and our dear friend the late Ian Degville have been a part of the club almost as long. Malc’s vision was that fencing should be available to all and this remains our club ethos to this day.

We are and have always been a non-profit making club, our coaches and committee, past and present, are all dedicated volunteers who give their time freely to run the club and give as many people as possible the chance to experience our fantastic sport.

What Is Fencing?

Fencing is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It's safe, fun, excellent for fitness, bodytone, balance, coordination, control, respect, good etiquette and all aspects of well-being.

The aim of the game is to score hits on your opponent's target, without being hit yourself. Fencing is not an aggressive sport, it is about timing, control and out-witting your opponent with attacking and defensive actions whilst using correct fencing behaviour and fair play. It is often referred to as physical chess as the mind plays a big part in staying one step ahead of your opponent.

Fencing can be enjoyed by all ages, there is no upper age limit and you are never too old to learn! It is suitable for all levels of fitness and ability. It often appeals to children and adults who are maybe shy, suffer with anxiety, lack of self confidence and who aren't particularly excited by the usual sports. To get inspired by the wider world of fencing have a look at our governing body.

“Chilwell Blades provides an inclusive, challenging and fun environment for those who wish to participate in fencing either as a social fencer, a vehicle for fitness or as a serious competitor .”
