Excalibur Report 2011 by Tom Nicholls

First things first, I want to say a massive thank you to all of the fencers that took part and for giving up your weekends to fence for Notts and Derby – without you there is no team and I hope you are all keen to come back again next year!

Overall, Notts and Derby came 7th out of 12 teams and secured the Womens Foil title and best individual Women’s Foilist – a massive improvement on last year’s result of 10th and a step in the right direction! As a team we managed to beat Devon 29-25, Dyfed 38-16, Gloucester 36-18, Leicester 30-24 and Wiltshire 44-10 which is a marked improvement on only narrowly beating two teams last year. With narrow losses to Somerset, Warwickshire and Hampshire Notts and Derby were not far off finishing in the top 5 this year!

We had some fantastic individual efforts over the weekend and I wish I could mention everybody but special note should be given to Catriona Sibert, Helen Solly and Katharine Schofield who brought home the Women’s Foil title! Catriona was also the best female fencer of the day in EVERY weapon having only lost 1 fight all weekend! Other individual results were Tom Nicholls with 29/33 finishing joint second in the Men’s Sabre, Helen Solly with 28/33 finishing 4th in the Women’s Foil and Lisa Hoole with 25/33 finishing 6th in the Women’s Sabre. A quick mention should be given to Greg Britton of Chilwell Blades as he was a last minute addition to the team and fenced brilliantly this weekend beating a number of highly ranked fencers and providing the other members of the Sabre team with a well needed rest (especially on Sunday morning!!). Another fencer to mention was Hazar Batman who fenced brilliantly all weekend to eventually tie with Mark Freestone on victories over the weekend – a great effort for his first time at Excalibur! I am pleased to say that everybody won fights this weekend (including Frazer Hughes even if he did leave it a little late on Sunday!) and as a team we won more fights than we lost and scored more hits than we conceded for the first time in 3 years.

Foil & Sabre Team Photos

The whole weekend had a great atmosphere and the amount of support that you all gave to each other on and off the piste was fantastic. It was great to see so many of you at the team meal on the Saturday night and Notts and Derby felt like a very close team - I hope everyone felt the same!

Thanks again for all coming and I hope very much to see all of you again next year!
